Tonight was yet another of the series of "cupcakes, coffee and conversation" events that (primarily) women have been hosting for U.S. Senate candidate Jennifer Brunner all over Ohio. Tonight’s was out in exurban Geauga County to the southeast of Cleveland. It was held in their spiffy new headquarters/social center in a strip mall in Newberry. They moved into the new space earlier this month form a small space nearby so that they could host events like this one, which got a great turnout. (There will also be phone banking there next Monday.) As usual, Geauga County party chair Janet Carson had the sharpest shoes in the room.

The cupcakes were again outstanding. My favorites were the chocolate ones with banana frosting imbedded with chocolate chips. Now, I love chocolate anyway, but the smooth burst of banana flavor gave the chocolate a bit of subtle oomph.
After everyone enjoyed their cupcakes and conversation, Jennifer spoke briefly, mostly about getting our economy moving again,. That was followed by a very informative forum, mostly on foreclosure — a problem gradually making its way out to more upscale areas like this — but also touching on credit and banking regulations. Jennifer, a local mortgage banker and a representative from Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) treasurer Jim Rokakis’ office gave their takes on how foreclosure is affecting entire communities community and what remedies needed to be taken to combat the problem. It might sound like dry subject matter, but it clearly touched an area of concern with the crowd, who peppered the panelists with questions and comments afterward.
Meanwhile, I learned that there is going to be a very cool campaign surprise coming from the Brunner campaign next week, which is sure to cause widespread amusement and delight.
There will be another cupcakes party in Lakewood (Cleveland suburb) on April 13, the same day as the City Club of Cleveland debate between Jennifer and her opponent, Lee Fisher. And for the men out there who think cupcakes are just too damned dainty, state reps. Mike Foley and Matt Patten will host "Beers for Brunner" April 17 at P.J. McIntyre’s Pub in Cleveland.
